As we’re celebrating Dedication Sunday, All Saints Fulham Choir will be singing a full mass at the 9.30am Eucharist on Sunday 8th July at All Saints Fulham Church.
They will sing Lennox Berkeley’s Missa Brevis.
Sir Lennox Berkeley (1903–1989) actually studied modern languages at Merton College, Oxford but went on to study music in France.
He was taught by Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Ravel in Paris. While he was there he also met and was inspired by Faure, Poulenc and Stravinsky.
Berkeley was a Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London for over 20 years after World War II. His pupils included David Bedford, Richard Rodney Bennett, William Mathias, Nicholas Maw and John Tavener.
It was during his time at the Academy that he wrote the Missa Brevis. It was first performed by the Choir of Westminster Cathedral in 1960.
