Candlemas: Simeon and Anna

IMGP1783On Sunday 1 February, the Church will be celebrating Candlemas or the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.

Candlemas is 40 days after the birth of Jesus. It was when Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to be presented to God at the temple.

There they met both the aged Simeon and the prophet, Anna. Both had been waiting all their lives to meet Christ.

Simeon prayed words that have been immortalised as the Nunc Dimittis which are sung each week at Evensong.

Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace; according to Thy word: for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people: to be a light to lighten the gentiles and to be the glory of Thy people Israel.

The day is called Candlemas as traditionally this was the day that all the candles used in church for the year were blessed.

As an introit at Sung Eucharist, All Saints Fulham Choir will sing When to the Temple Mary Went (Maria wallt zum Heiligtum) by German composer Johannes Eccard (1553-1611).

Singing in the video is the choir of St Paul’s Cathedral.
