All Saints Fulham Choir will be singing two versions of Psalm 23 at the 9.30am Eucharist on Sunday 11 May. Jonathan, director of music, has composed a new 3-part psalm chant, and as the anthem, the Choir will sing Lennox Berkeley’s The Lord is My Shepherd.
Sir Lennox Berkeley (1903–1989) actually studied modern languages at Merton College, Oxford but went on to study music in France. He was taught by Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Ravel in Paris. While he was there he also met and was inspired by Faure, Poulenc and Stravinsky.
Berkeley was a Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London for over 20 years after World War II. His pupils included David Bedford, Richard Rodney Bennett, William Mathias, Nicholas Maw and John Tavener.
Berkeley’s version was commissioned specially by Chichester Cathedral for its 900th anniversary in 1975.
