There was an introit Abendlied (“Evening Song” op.69, No. 3) written by the 19th century organist and composer Josef Rheinberger. This is a contemplative a cappella piece for 6 parts (we sang as SSATTB but it can also be sung as SAATTB).
The text of the piece is taken from chapter 24 of Luke’s Gospel.
Two disciples meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus after the tumultuous events of the crucifixion. They don’t recognise Jesus even as he talks to them about the scriptures. The words are those the disciples say to Jesus as they urge him to stay with them when they reach Emmaus.
Bleib’bei uns, denn es will Aben werden,
Und der Tag hat sich geneige
English translation (King James Version):
Stay with us, for it is toward evening,
And the day is almost done.
