Here’s Johnny

The women of the Choir will sing without the men on Sunday 22nd January at All Saints Church Fulham. They will sing Light of the World, a 20th century piece by celebrated British Jazz composer Sir John (Johnny) Dankworth (1927-2010) at Sung Eucharist.

Dankworth attended the Royal Academy of Music in London from the age of 17. He was awarded Musician of the Year in 1949 in Britain. This was the first in a litany of awards he received throughout his life both at home and abroad. He was presented with a fellowship of the Royal Academy in 1973 and the following year appointed CBE. He was knighted in 2006, the first British jazz musician to receive this honour.

    Light of the World

Light beyond shadow, joy beyond tears,
Love that is greater when darkest our fears;
Deeper the peace when the storm is around,
Dearer the Christ to the lost who is found.

Light of the world, Jesus shining!
Sins of the world, see Him dying!
In our darkness, He is light,
In our crying, He is love,
In the noise of life,
imparting peace that passes understanding;
Light beyond shadow, joy beyond tears,

Love that is greater when darkest our fears;
Deeper the peace when the storm is around,
Dearer the Christ to the lost who is found.

The lyrics to Light of the World were written by Paul Wigmore, who wrote a moving tribute to Johnny Dankworth on his website:

“In the ’60s, I had revelled in the sound of ‘Johnny’ Dankworth’s Big Band rollicking out its smart, crackling jazz. Whenever he was going to be on the air I made quite sure I didn’t miss it. He was big. And now, here he was, the man himself, actually speaking to me. When you’re old you can’t absorb these things quickly.”

After his death, Channel 4 screened a documentary chronicling both his life and that of his singer wife, Dame Cleo Laine, with interviews and previously unseen footage. It is still available to watch on 4oD.
