Further Beyond: A Spanish Evening

Further Beyond (Plus Ultra) is the motto for the Kingdom of Spain which is appropriate as the Choir will be singing pieces from Spanish composers at choral evensong on Sunday 25th September at 6pm.

Music will include works from two giants of 16th century Spanish choral music – Guerrero and Victoria.

The Nunc Dimittis and Ave Maria from Tomás Luis de Victoria and Francisco Guerrero’s Magnificat quarti toni.

Francisco Guerrero

Guerrero (1528-1599) was a composer in the Renaissance period from Seville, Spain.

He was Chapel Master at Jaen Cathedral aged just 18.

He then moved at 21 to become chapel master at Seville Cathedral, which is the third largest church in the world, and he worked there for the rest of his life.
