A Victorian Evening

Last Sunday during evensong, we sang two works from the 16th Century Spanish composer Tomàs Luis de Victoria (his surname can also be spelt the Italian way as Vittoria) as 2011 is the 400th anniversary of his death.

We sang his setting of the canticle Nunc Dimittis. This beautiful acappella piece is available to download from CPDL, it has been edited by Edward Tambling who was organ scholar at Westminster Abbey.

Also as our anthem we sang his motet Ave Maria.

Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Dominus tecum;
benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Regina coeli,
dulcis et pia, o Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
ut cum electis te videamus.
